Various Different Problems With Computer

Options
I have the following problems with my computer Windows 98 and was wondering if I have a problem or if the computer is just old and worn now.

1. I keep getting this system has performed an illegal program and it shuts down.
2. I keep getting a microsoft error report and the system closes down.
3. The system keeps jamming and I have to restart.
3. When I boot up - half way through the installation I have to 'press any key to continue' to continue the boot up programme. The message is cannot find device file system.ini c:\progra1/symatec\symevnt.386. Once I press any key it continues to boot up. I was given this computer a year ago by a relation and this has always been the case when booting up which I thought was normal but my friend has been using it and has told me its not - it should fully boot up without me having to press any keys.

From an earlier post I sent and recommendations I ran ccleaner which I have installed and which I have run. It sorted 353 entries but I still get the problem. I also ran spybot and the message was there was 5 entries it could not sort and asked to run on next restart to which I said yes. On the next run after that the only message I got was parameter missing and the system jammed so I had to turn the system off manually and restart. Any ideas please. thanks.

    Hi stressedoutmum

I believe the message you get relates to an inactive Norton Antivirus. I reckon your relative never used it beyond the 90 days Norton gives to you when you buy a computer. This is related to files which the computer is trying to load at boot up but can't now find. You therefore need to get rid of the associated registry keys.

    Three options.

You could try and remove everything to do with Norton from your computer. To do this you will need to use the special removal too available here ...

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl

Remember - this tool removes everything "Norton". If you have any other Norton programs you want to keep (e.g. Ghost) then you will have to reinstall those again afterwards.

Secondly, you could go to Start > Run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes) in the white space and click OK.

Click on the Startup tab at the top and disable anything related to this activity to stop it running at satrtup.

Third option ..... you could download & run HijackThis available here ....

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Save the final Notepad log report and post it back here for more advice. It will show any "run" keys etc. that need to be stopped.

We can give you more advice from there.

FOOTNOTE > if you are OK with editing your registry manually here are some of the keys that have anything to do with "symevnt.386" which you will need to remove, if present. If you are NOT confident with editing the registry DON'T do this.

    1). [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shared DLLs].
On the right window it said "C:/Program Files/Symantec/Symevnt.386"

    2). [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shared DLLs].
On the right window it said "C:/Windows\System\Symevnt.386".

    3). [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Shared Usage\Symevnt.386].
This is the one that was just a folder on the Left side, nothing on the right window.

    4). [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Symevnt].
On the right window it said "C:/Program Files/Symantec/Symevnt.386".

    notepad c:\windows\system.ini

delete the line with symevnt.386 in, the press key problem should go away.

    goto https://www.windowsupdate.com and patch 98

install an upto date virus scanner if you don't have on https://www.avast.com etc , or avg, and ad-aware spyware scanner

Have tried using the uninstall tool but keep getting this message
We were not able to install needed files. Please run the program again and make sure that you click Yes or Install.

If no dialog box appeared the first time that you tried to install the program, read Security settings prevent Automated Support Assistant from running.

In addition, if Norton Internet Security is installed, read ActiveX control installation fails due to Norton Internet Security Settings

To run the program again, var urlRerunASA = window.location.search; document.write('' + 'click here' + '.'); click here.

Have tried running again but same message. Also advice on ActiveX above asks you to set security level to default. Now that I've done that I keep getting a message saying other people may be able to see your internet messages do you want to continue. I went back and reset it to custom level but still got the message. Have looked on msconfig but nothing there that looks like anything belonging to norton
    var urlRerunASA = window.location.search; document.write('' + 'rerun_asa.gif' + '');

    No, try downloading this

    http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/Autoruns.zip

search for symevnt, and remove the tick next to it.

    or this

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner.zip

scan your registry for symevnt, and delete them as in pchelpman's earlier post

Gosh don't know what I'm doing but have scanned using your recommendation and got this but not sure whether to delete them all or just the last one. Also tried highlighting the last one and pressing delete but it doesn't disappear - how do I get rid of it then please.

double click on the entries in regscanner, it will open them up in regedit, then delete each one.. be careful not to delete anything else.. then reboot..

This shouldn't go wrong, but just in case it does, this is what you have to do to put it back the way it was,

startup PC, hold down F8 (at the starting windows bit) to get to the safe mode options, select command prompt.

and you should get a black screen.

    type in

    scanreg /restore

, and select yesterdays date.. then reboot.
